What Is Kashi-Pan

Kashi-Pan, or カシパン, means snack bread in Japanese. Kashi-Pan comes in many different forms, including, Komugi-Pan (#1 a wheat flour-based sweet roll), Cream-Pan (#2 a roll with a sweet cream filling), Melon-Pan (#3 a sweet roll with sugar cookie crus)and much more.

Initially, bread-making flourished in Japan during the Meiji Era(1868-1912), which is known for rapid development and westernization. Kashi Pan originated in 1874 when Kimura Yasube’e, an owner of a local bakery in Japan, was inspired to create Ann-Pan (bread with a red bean paste filling). He drew inspiration from Manju, a steamed bite-sized bread with red bean paste. Due to its similarity to Manju, Ann-Pan became incredibly popular and started a snack bread movement.
